From the ashes of a 25-year marriage, I’m finding seeds for something new and beautiful
A story about endings, grace, and building a life that’s hand built and true.
I never expected my life to look like this.
After 28 years together, Megan and I are moving on from the daily routine that our marriage had become—the unthinkable has become undeniable.
It's over.
It's not the ending I imagined, but it's the one that's here.
There's been pain, yes. Grief, too. But what surprises me most is the peace. It hasn't been perfect. There have been mistakes on both sides. However, I can honestly say that I hold no bitterness or resentment—just gratitude for the seasons we shared—and openness for what's next.
I’m building a new life now.
Literally.
By hand.
I don't have all the details figured out. I don't know exactly where I'll land.
But I know how I want to live:
Slowly.
With intention.
Rooted in beauty.
Trusting that the next season will only bring me joy if I bring it with me.
I've spent most of my life building for others. Now, I want to build for the story, for the soul—not just the sale.
This space, The Hand Built Life, is where I'll share the journey:
Selling my forever home on the coast of Maine.
Searching for the right piece of land—somewhere in the Virginia wine country.
Designing and building a small, soulful home for myself and soon for others as well—homes that feel like sanctuaries.
Building each home by hand, with love, care, and faith.
And along the way, reflecting on what it means to build a life that's true.
This is about more than design or real estate. It's about letting go of what you thought your life would be and stepping into what your life could be, with open hands and an open heart.
If you are going through a season of change, like I am, if you have lost something or someone and are wondering how to move forward, or if you are seeking beauty, tranquility, and a slower pace of life, you are welcome here.
I'm not here to tell you how to live. I'm just here to ask the questions—and build the life I want to live.
By hand.
Let's build something beautiful together.
— Mike
